Come è ora! - As it is now!

Nota: Le prime piccole e povere dimore dei frati minori venivano indicate con l'appellativo “luoghi”, per sottolinearne l'umiltà e la provvisorietà.
Il segno appeso sopra l'immagine elaborata della Sindone (nel lato sinistro della seconda foto) è la lettera HE, dell’antico alfabeto semitico meridionale, misteriosamente connessa alla conversione di Marcello Ciai.

Ecco come è sorto: Le mie notti le passo sotto i Portici della Basilica di San Francesco, dove anche vengono persone per parlare con me e per pregare. Viene a notte fonda anche Marcello Ciai, l'uomo che grazie a Dio nel 1980 fondò la comunità di cui ho fatto parte dall'inizio e poi nel 1991 l'Associazione Iaca. A motivo della sua salute precaria e del rigore di certe notti invernali con il vento e la neve, rivolgemmo domanda al Comune per avere un piccolo spazio dove poterci ritirare a pregare: una richiesta di aiuto per una persona malata, a cui ha corrisposto un premuroso gesto dell'amministrazione comunale. Abbiamo ristrutturato con impegno quel vecchio e malsano ex-urinatoio abbandonato, che certo non recava lustro a quel suggestivo tratto di Via San Gabriele dell'Addolorata, sotto la Piazzetta delle Erbe. L'abbiamo trasformato in una piccola ma suggestiva cappellina, per nulla impensieriti dall'origine certo non nobile del posto: nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, il Signore della Gloria, nacque in una stalla! A nostra sorpresa questo luogo ha destato e desta l'attenzione di tanti turisti e/o di pellegrini italiani e stranieri: lo fotografano e infilano biglietti con richieste di preghiere nella fessura che abbiamo praticato appositamente nella porta di legno. Richieste che onoriamo pregando lì nella notte. Tanto interesse e apprezzamento è attestato dalle molte lettere, messaggi ed e-mail che riceviamo da tante parti dell'Italia e del mondo. Questo luogo di preghiera dunque si sta rivelando una benedizione per tanti oltre a costituire una particolarissima nuova attrattiva spirituale di questa nostra terra di San Francesco.

How it is risen: I spend my nights under the Arcade of the Basilica of Saint Francis, where people come also to speak with me, and to pray. Late in the night also Marcello Ciai arrives, the man who thanks to God in 1980 founded the community of which I was part from the beginning, and then in 1991 the Association Iaca. Because of this precarious health and the rigor of some winter nights with wind and snow, we addressed question to the City council to have a small space where we could withdraw to pray: a plea for help for a sick person, which was accompanied by an attentive gesture of the municipal administration. We have restored with diligence the old and unhealthy abandoned ex-urinal, which certainly bore no luster to that suggestive stretch of "San Gabriele dell' Addolorata" Street, under the "Piazzetta delle Erbe". We transformed it into a small but suggestive chapel, certainly not worrying about the non-noble origin of the place: our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, was born in a stable! To our surprise, this place has attracted and attracts the attention of many tourists and/or Italian and foreign pilgrims: they photograph it and shove tickets with prayer requests in the slot that we prepared on purpose in the wooden door, demands that we honour praying there in the night. So much interest and appreciation is evidenced by the many letters, messages and e-mails we receive from many parts of Italy and the world. This place of prayer, therefore, is proving to be a blessing to many and is also a very special new spiritual attractiveness of this our land of Saint Francis.
